Weighing the Merits and Disadvantages of Contactless Cards

Gone are the days when the one thing that defined transactions in India was only through cash. We have moved way ahead and with the recent introduction of debit cards and credit cards, sending money to your long distance relative has become easier. Truly, India is moving forward and the recent technological innovation that has just been embraced by the Indians is of course, the "contactless cards". Payment through mobile wallets and othe online virtual softwares is the one simple way to which every online shopper has resorted to.

Contactless cards have been issued by many banks but the baton was taken by the ICICI bank. The bank introduced the contactless cards on 7th  January 2015. The upsurge in their popularity is evident as many banks have step forward to ensure that they develop this new technology and make it available for their customers too. The POS machine is common today and these are going to be soon replaced by the NFS enabled machines by SBI bank.
Contactless cards are being touted as the next generation payment methods because people won't have to physically touch their cards to pay for anything. This is already the case with virtual transactions but when it comes to shopping in malls, you won't have to input the PIN like you usually do.

This is possible due to the near-field-communication (NFC) technology that these contactless cards use. This technology helps in exchange of data between devices in the range of 10 centimetre. So, make any transaction you want by just tapping the card on a point-of-sale (POS) machine and it is done.

Now, you have a fair amount of knowledge about contactless cards but venturing into something new especially when it concerns your hard earned money can be daunting, so you should be aware of some of the major pros and cons of the contactless cards which are listed below.
The one reason why everyone would be shifting to the contactless cards is that they are convenient. Yes, they are convenient because you just have to tap it on the POS machine and in the near future, you won't have to do that also because the NFC enabled machines would be there. So, talk about convenience and there you go! These cards are perfect for use in demanding retail environments, like supermarkets, petrol stations, convenience stores, and quick-service restaurants.
Every good thing has a negative side too, and contactless cards are no different. This technology has a few shortfalls, but the companies are working hard to resolve these issues and make the contactless cards completely safe.
Enough awareness is not there about the contactless cards. Since, this technology has just arrived, educating people about these cards is something that will take a long time.
The contactless cards can only be used by people who own a Smartphone as only a limited number of paying portals have made it available such as PayWave/PayPass.
The present limitation on a single tap is INR 2,000. This means that you can only shop for INR 2,000 with a single tap from your contactless cards which is very low considering the shopping bills one accumulates in the malls. You can shop for more than this limited amount, but you will have to enter your PIN for those transactions. Defeating the purpose of contactless cards, right?
Not all the POS machines have been upgraded to the NFC technology, hence you cannot use your contactless cards everywhere.
Accidental payments are something that you will have to look out for. When you are too close to the POS machine, accidental payment might happen.
Despite all the efforts to encrypt the data, there are still malwares and spywares looking out for contactless cards and steal all the information.
Contactless cards are surely here to stay and impact the economy of Indian market in a huge way. But, there is a lot more work to be done on them.
Topaz 512 NFC forum type 1 tag which 13.56MHz Near Field communication tag/ identification Read/write NFC card. It is working to the ISO/IEC 18092, ISO/IEC21481 and ISO/IEC 14443A standards.
The topaz 512 card is a two terminal device designed to be connected a loop antenna to produce a passive NFC/RFID tag operating in standard unlicensed 13.56MHz frequency band.
The read/write data within the Topaz IC memory is EEPROM-based, allowing individual blocks to become locked into read only operation by contactless command. Once locked, to obtain the vehicle irreversible.
The Topaz IC is based on an actual physical EEPROM array sized 120 bytes.
Passive operation implies that no battery is needed because the Topaz IC gathers its operational energy from the interrogation field generated from the NFC Reader/Writer unit.
Features:
-Topaz IC can be used in NFC Forum Tags/Smartposter/ One-touch Setup applications and also general RFID
-Focused on operation with NFC devices which attempt to ISO/IEC 18092 (NFCIP-1) and/or ISO/IEC 21481 (NFCIP-2)
-Made to be suitable for the ISO/IEC 14443:2001 parts 2 and 3
-ISO/IEC 14443 type A modulation scheme
-Passive RFID tag operating in the unlicensed 13.56MHz band
- Write and read (R/W) operation
-Once Programmable (OTP) & Write Once Read Many (WORM) operation
- Typical operating range as much as 10cm determined by tag/reader antenna coil sizes and orientation in accordance with the various readers unit
-Fast data communication rate of 106 kbit/s
-UID provision in Topaz IC to allow collision detection by means of the various readersAndCopy writer issuing a RID (Read UID) command.
-Protection for data throughout the write operation from the Topaz IC only responding to commands prepended with a matching UID. This also provides protection from the situation where there are multiple tags from the reader field
- Fast byte write speed
- Data communications are protected by 16-bit CRC integrity checking
-EPROM based user read/write memory area organized as 12 blocks of 8-bytes
-7-bytes of Unique Identification (UID) number to use in data authentication/anti-cloning
-96-bytes of user read/write memory
-6-bytes of OTP memory
-All memory areas are individually one time lockable by RF command to prevent further modification of data and to produce read only functionality
